Punyakoti Kathe:
Ajji Kaalada Kathe Punyakoti is a known Josh-filled moral story, every one of us has heard.
The story goes like this.
A golla (cow owner) called Kalinga had a herd of cows.
He used to take the herd of cows to graze in the fields daily.
Since the grazing of cows took a lot of time, he would usually play his flute until the cows grazing in the field.
After the cows had their tummy full they would return to the place where Kalinga had sat.
One fine day as usual Kalinga took the herd of cows to graze. By evening he called every cow by their names.
Cows responded and came back with Kalinga to return back home.
Since the herd of cows was pretty big Kalinga did not manage to have a count.
By evening, one cow named Punyakoti had lost its way as it went away from the herd’s grazing place.
As the night started looming all around, Punyakoti started rushing to its house to return to its kid to feed milk.
In the meantime, a Tiger was looking for prey and did get Punyakoti rounded.
Punyakoti pleaded with the Tiger to let it go, as its baby cow was home and would feed the baby and come back to him for the Tiger to have her (Punyakoti) as a sumptuous meal.
Since Tiger did not believe this, Punyakoti promised that it will return to the graceful tiger to be his meal, or else he can raid its home and eat everyone.
Tiger unwillingly let go of the cow Punyakoti.
Punyakoti returned to its baby and fed the baby cow with milk.
Then Punyakoti gave the bad news that it had to return to the tiger for being its prey.
Punyakoti called all the cows and requested each cow “Munde Bandare Haaya Bedi, Hinde Bandare Odeya Bedi”.
Meaning, that please do not push the baby cow if it came in front of the other cows. Also when it comes in the back do not kick the baby cow.
Having said this returned to the tiger to be his meal. Punyakoti said, “Please have a sumptuous meal, as I did have my stomach full to feed you well”.
The tiger “Vyaghra” got so filled with tears of the honesty that the cow Punyakoti showed.
The tiger Vyaghra mentioned to the cow Punyakoti that, “I cannot have such an honest cow”. Please go back to your herd and be happy with your baby cow.
I’ll not be alive to feed on unharmful preys like you. The tiger Vyaghra did jump off the cliff and fall off.
Punyakoti returned back and recited the whole story to the Golla Kalinga and the herd of Cows.
Punyakoti lived happily ever after.
Moral: Honesty pays dividends in the Long Run.
