Few lines with its significance from Bilvashtakam Lyrics:

Tridalam Trigunaakaaram Trinetram Cha Triyayudham ।
Trijanma Papasamharam Ekabilvam Shivaarpanam

This means the Bilva patre is a collection of 3 leaves put together.

It indicates the 3 eyes of Shiva, the Trishula of Shiva and it is triangle shaped, and by offering the Bilva Patre will erase sins of your three births.

Moolatho Brahma Roopaya, Madhyato Vishnu Roopine, Agratho Shiva Roopaya, Eka Bilvam Shivarpanam

This means that Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Shiva reside in the Bilva leaf.

Even in Lakshmi Ashtothram, one mantra is

Om Bilva Nilayayai Namaha conveys that Goddess Lakshmi resides in the Bilva tree.

Kotikanya Mahaadaanam Ekabilvam Shivaarpanam”

I offer one leaf of Bilwa to Lord Shiva, For it is equal to gifting a thousand elephants, Or the performing of hundred fire sacrifices, Or doing Kanya Daana to the Groom of one crore girls in marriage.

Reading this holy octet of Bilvashtakam, In the presence of Lord Shiva, Would save one from all sins, And in the end take you to the world of Shiva.

  • According to Shiva Purana; Lord Bholenath is Lord of mountains and jungles. Thus, his abode is always infested with wild trees and Bilva leaves are often found in wild.
  • As Shiva is Ashutosh meaning he is easily pleased, he does not need anything expensive but utmost humility. Unlike other sacred items; Bilva tree leaves are inexpensive!
  • According to Bilvashtakam; Goddess Mahalakshmi resides in Bilva Patra; thus, in other words, devotees offer spiritual wealth to Lord Shiva!
